During the summer holidays we tried to explore many different parts of the city. This day we decided to take a walk up to the Mother of Georgia for a look and then use the gondola to come down. With a little bit of bribery of an ice cream on the way and the chance to see Repunzal in the castle we finally made it to the top.
The Mother of Georgia sits on the hill high above Tbilisi. Georgia is a country that has had its fair share of the invaders. The story is told, of this 50 meter high aluminum statue which I might add up close looks like a children's dream, lots of oversized mecano pieces bolted together. She stands watching over the city with a sword in one hand and a cup of wine in the other. If you are a friend you are welcomed with wine, if you are foe you are welcomed with the sword. From our house we also have the pleasure of seeing her, in the sun she gleams like a piece of polished silver, but on rare
misty days she looms like a leaden shadow over the city. She is far from elegant, she is sturdy and looks like she means business.
